Introducing Ms. Abbie at Sussex!

How long have you worked at Momentum?4THJULY13
4 years

What is your position at Momentum?
I am currently the Administrative and Marketing Coordinator. When I first started working at Momentum I was a Pre-K teacher for two years, then I was the Little Scholars teacher for about a year before taking my position up in the office.11872015_10153529387782224_8589458390009503038_o

What made you want to work in child care?
While trying to decide what kind of career I wanted, I never imagined working in child care. After going through many different majors in college, from Art and Design to Nursing, I finally decided on Business Administration and Art History. While I was in school I took a job as a nanny, and then starting working at a child care center that had late hours that worked with my school schedule. I quickly began to see the importance in quality child care and it made me realize how much early educators impact the first years of a child’s life. After graduating, I was on the lookout for a variety of jobs but working in child care seemed to be the right path for me.14856156_10154374077892224_8790100695228679203_o

IMG_4458What or who inspires you? Why?
I’m lucky to have many inspiring people in my life. One person in particular is my mom. She has worked in Early Education for over 30 years, so I’ve always looked up to her and I go to her often for professional advice. I’ve always tried to mirror her hard work and dedication as I learn and grow in my career in child care. In addition to looking up to her in a professional sense, she is also an inspiring and strong mother of four children. I have learned so much from both of my parents, and I hope to take all of those life lessons and be as good of a parent as they are.

AbbieIan_101

What is your favorite kind of activity to teach?
My favorite activity to teach has always been art and sensory! They both allow children to get creative, explore new things, and get messy!

IMG-5768

What is one of your first memories from school?
I only have vague memories from when I was in preschool, but I know I was always having fun with my friends and teachers. In Kindergarten, I remember Zero the Hero coming to our class. She was this wacky lady who came to our class to teach us about counting.

What is one of your hidden talents? IMG_5764I played ice hockey my whole life and even played through college at UW-Eau Claire. I still try to play as much as I can in adult hockey leagues, which is how I met my husband, Ian. Our son, Owen, has also developed a love for the game. 🙂

IMG_1916

Do you have any pets?  We have a dog named Libby. She is a Pomeranian, Shiba Inu mix.

IMG_0731

What is your favorite thing to cook?
I love to bake and cook. I don’t have a particular meal I like to cook, but I just love to explore new recipes and try new things.

What is your favorite way to relax?
Spending time with my family is always relaxing. I also enjoy doing yoga and going to the gym to relax and unwind.

What is your favorite TV show/guilty pleasure?IMG_5763My favorite shows are Friends and New Girl.

What makes a “good day” at Momentum?
A good day at Momentum is when children and teachers are happy, healthy, and ready to take on the day! It definitely makes it easy to work in environment where everyone is so dedicated to making a difference in young children’s lives. And it’s always great when Cindy decides to pop in for the day. 😉

What kind of morning routine do you have to get excited for the day?
I’m not a great morning person, but I’m usually the first one to wake up. I eat a good breakfast, make Owen’s lunch and my lunch, get us both ready for the day and then head out the door. Nothing special, but with a little one, it’s important to stick to the same routine.

What is the best thing about working at Momentum?
Every day is different, and you never really know what you’re going to get. I love that I don’t work somewhere that is mundane and the same work every day. Working at Momentum allows me to use my creativity, and I get to work with a variety of children. I also love that I get to see Owen throughout the day and see how much fun he is having!

If you could take your class on a fieldtrip anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would take a preschool class to a famous art museum. Not enough young children are taught to appreciate fine art.

CJD Awareness Day: Why is November 12th Special to us at Momentum Early Learning?

ashelymomAt Momentum Early Learning family is important to us. Whether it’s the families who bring their children to Momentum, or the families who support our wonderful teachers, we simply cannot put a value on their worth. CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease), sadly took a family member from one of our beloved teachers at our Sussex location. Ms. Ashley is passionate about sharing her family’s story and wants to spread awareness of this devastating disease.

What is CJD?
Creutzfeldt-Jakob (KROITS-felt YAH-kobe) disease is a degenerative brain disorder (a human prion Disease) that leads to dementia and, ultimately, death. Symptoms of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) can resemble those of other dementia-like brain disorders, such as Alzheimer’s. However, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease usually progresses much more rapidly. The condition causes personality changes, anxiety, depression, and memory loss, usually within a few months. Many people lapse into coma. Some people can live with CJD for up to a year, others only live weeks to months until they pass away. Unfortunately, with every CJD diagnosis, it is always fatal.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease may occur spontaneously, be inherited, or be transmitted by contact with infected tissue, such as during a transplant or from eating contaminated meat. My mom had Sporadic CJD which means doctors don’t know why or how she got it. Luckily for my family, it does not run in our genetics. Treatment consists of supportive care, because no effective treatment exists, the focus is on alleviating pain and relieving symptoms.

IMG_0648About my Mom, AimeeIMG_2514
My mom was the most wonderful person I have ever met. She was my absolute best friend. My mom loved life and the most important people in her life were her family; especially her three kids. Everything she did, she did for us. She was the most selfless person I knew. She would go out of her way for anyone if it meant she could help them in any way. My mom loved making people happy anyway she could. I have such amazing memories of my mom and for that I am forever grateful. My mom was only on this earth for 52 years but she really touched so many lives in that short time. I was lucky to have known her for 24 of those years and my heart aches every day that goes by without her physically here with me. CJD took my mom’s physical self away from me and my family but it will never be able to take away our wonderful memories we have of her and the people we have become today because of her.

We watched my mom suffer horrendously with CJD for 54 days before it ultimately took her life. It was the worst thing I have ever experienced and it has changed me forever. I have never known a loss so horrible as the loss of my mom. I’m writing about this today because CJD is so very rare and many people do not know about it; it needs to be talked about. Research needs to happen to help find a cure for this monstrous disease. I don’t ever want another family to go through what my family went through. Unfortunately, even though it is rare, people are dealing with this every day. And scary enough, other than my own mom, I know two other people who have passed away from CJD even though it’s supposed to be a one in a million disease.IMG_0028

IMG_0611How CJD Affected my Family
With loss and suffering comes grief. I have never experienced grief quite like this ever before. I learned quickly that it is okay to not be okay. Sometimes you need to cry. Sometimes you need to spend a night at your sister’s house to laugh and cry on and off. Sometimes you need to be by yourself and not say anything to anyone. Sometimes you get angry and ask yourself why this happened to you. My mom passed away on Christmas Eve of 2016. I am writing this nearly two years since that day, and I am finally just now coming to peace with things. I know in my heart that my mom didn’t actually leave me. She left physically but I still feel her with me all the time. Telling me to relax and laugh at myself when I’m feeling frustrated. I feel her telling me to lighten up and stop taking things so seriously. Don’t get me wrong, I still cry once in a while, I still get sad and feel lost. I think I will always grieve the loss of my mom but I’m learning how to live with it.IMG_0014

I’ve had an amazing support system including my dad, step mom, siblings, my amazing husband and in-law’s. I couldn’t have made it through any of it without them. I never thought I could live without my mom but little did I know, she prepared me to be strong like her. Going through something like this as a family was tragic but it has also made us stronger as a whole. It has made us really cherish family time even more than we did before. The bond between my family has always been strong but we are even stronger now.

IMG_0612Living My Mom’s Legacy
As I mentioned before, my mom was so kind and considerate to other people. She literally brought so much joy to everyone she knew. That is how I remember her. That is how I want other people to remember her. Every day I try to do at least one thing in honor of my mom to make someone else’s day. Whether that is a simple compliment, paying for the person’s coffee behind me in the drive thru at Starbucks, offering a helping hand to someone in need, or just smiling at someone as they walk by. A little kindness can go a long way and sometimes a simple smile can mean the world to someone. My mom always “paid it forward” and I try to do the same every day.

What you can do to help?IMG_0364
Spread awareness! Wear purple on November 12! Like CJD awareness pages on Facebook. Thank you so much for taking the time to read about my mom and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. I appreciate it more than you know.IMG_0593

What makes a “good day” at Momentum?

A good day is when I see the light bulb go off in my students. That is when you know they have learned something new. They radiate a sense of pride that makes me smile.

What kind of morning routine do you have to get excited for the day?

After I get up and ready in the morning I get in my car and listen to the radio. I enjoy this quiet time. It helps me get prepared for the day ahead.

What is the best thing about being a teacher?afdaf

The best part is being able to help young children learn and grow. Also, the hugs are great too! 😊

If you could take your class on a fieldtrip anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Honestly, I would take them to the zoo. The age I teach loves animals; I know they would love it.

Introducing Ms. Megan at Sussex!

How long have you been working at momentum?4THJULY5
March 2018

What classroom do you teach?
Trailblazing Tots

What made you want to become a teacher?
In high school, I wanted to become a marine biologist or zoologist but that fell through because it was out of state for college. Then senior year I volunteered at Pewaukee Elementary and loved working one and one with kids, and as a group. After high school at Pewaukee I went to WCTC to get my associates degree in Early Childhood Education and Instructional Assistant. This fall my plan is to go to Alverno to get my Bachelors Degree in Education.

megan7What/who inspires you?
Walt Disney. He failed so many times but did not give up. He believed in that one thing (Mickey Mouse) to succeed, which made many people happy.

What is one of your first memories from school?
I was the only person in my family to go to Pre-K because I did not talk until I was five ( shocking I know ). I remember the yellow school bus getting me from my house and how much fun I had going off to school by myself.

What is one of your hidden talents?
I can move my kneecap and I’m double jointed in both arms.

megan2Do you have any pets?
Tom and I have a black lab/pit mix (we think that’s what she is) named Shadow. We named her that because when she was little she was scared of her own shadow.megan6

What is your favorite thing to cook?
Well, Ms. Megan doesn’t cook or the fire department would be at the house all the time 😂 but my favorite food is spaghetti!

What is your favorite way to relax?
When I’m not at the race track with Tom, I like to lay around with a coloring book and listen to music, or watch Netflix.

What is your favorite TV show?
Pretty Little Liars, Disney Fairy Tale Weddings, or The Fosters.

What makes a “good day” at Momentum?
When all the kids are healthy and have a smile on there faces! Also when you walk in the room and they scream your name and give you a big hug in the morning, or even after nap.

What kind of morning routine do you have to get excited for the day?
Wake up (on time), I get in my car and turn on Disney music, and stop at Starbucks to get a java chip fappacino. I love walking into trailblazing tots to hear all the kids scream “MEGAN” with their arms open wide for a hug!

What’s the best thing about being a teacher?
It is a very reward job watching the kids learn and grow each day. Teachers don’t go into the job to make a ton of money. It is always the outcome that is such a reward. There is never a dull moment in teaching and each day is different. Seeing all the smiling faces and all the hugs you can get throughout the day can change a teachers’s day for the better. I wouldn’t ask for any other job. Teaching and helping children is where I’m supposed to be!

If you could take your class anywhere in the world for a field trip, where would you go?megan4 megan5

Disney World! Just seeing the smiles on children’s faces at Disney World could make anyone happy. The excitement you feel when you walk down Main Street to see the castle makes you forget about the outside world and reality. Plus, I love Disney so I would have fun too!
